The data packet from ‘Mouse’ was pretty unspecific – “There is a job that may interest you. Go to Gomi Emporium for more information. Tell them Friedlander Bey sent you.”
Hmm, the Bey – a big time crime boss – and the Gomi Emporium. Why would Lady Emily be teaming up with one of Night City’s largest crime bosses? This could be interesting. It can’t hurt to check into it. With these two big names it could pad my pocket pretty well. The proceeds could go a long way in funding my ‘project’. If this is as big as I suspect then it will probably attract some other people of talent and it can’t hurt to know more people.
‘Mouse’ surely wouldn’t steer me wrong. After I put down those thugs beating him in the alley he promised to repay the favor. I wasn’t really expecting much but I’ll have to thank him if this turns out well. That is a big IF though, from what I’ve heard dealing with Bey can either leave you well off, or wishing you had never dealt with him. I’ll have to play this one carefully.
The docks were shrouded in fog from the moisture coming in off the sea. It was late but there was still activity – workers loading and unloading cargo, patrons moving from one establishment to another, eyes watching and ready to report unwanted activity. I scoped out the location for some time and there didn’t seem to be any suspicious activity. There was no sign of corporate hitmen waiting to pounce. The coast seemed clear for now.
I moved carefully through the dark shadows and entered the light near the entrance. I opened the door, sounding a little chime, and entered the Emporium. Casually, I browsed around a bit while I scoped out the situation a little further. Naturally, I spotted the security cameras and control boxes for the Telesec 2000 system – a very nice system for a shop in the docks, but we all know this is no plain shop. I picked up a couple small items and approached the counter with a man waiting nearby.
“Ah, you find something you like?”, he inquires.
“Well, you had a few things but not what I really wanted.”
He responds, “Oh, what were you looking for? Perhaps we can acquire it for you.”
“I came looking for something pretty specific. ‘The Bey’ told me I could find it here.”
A look of realization came over the man’s face. “Oh, what you want is back here then.”, while motioning to a door behind him. “One second.”
My trained eye noticed that while he motioned behind him, he simultaneously made a small motion under the counter with his other hand. A moment later the door opened and a gruff man appeared.
The person behind the counter spoke to the newcomer, “He was sent by Bey to see our special selection.” Then he turned back to me and raised a platform in the counter, “Go ahead.”
The gruff man patted me down and took my pistol and knife, handing it back to the man behind the counter. Then he led me on in silence till we came to an elevator. We stepped in and went up. Then he finally spoke, "Get out here and go to the door.
The doors opened and I stepped forward toward the doorway at the end of the hall. This was it, the moment of truth. I would find out what all this was about and if these people could offer me anything I needed.
